Åbo – not only the culture capitol

Yes, i could not wait and had to get a sneak peak of what will be the european culture capitol of 2011: Åbo! Most of you will know it as Turku but since i went their with 2 swinish (swedish/ finish) friends in order to get to one of the biggest swedish finish events of the year i should use their native name as well. Riding their friday directly after school i was fortunate enough to visit a sitz (joint drinking, singing and get together with rules in an student atmosphere) in another city of finland.

Glass Fiber Boat

Since a couple of weeks Manuel and me are part of the composite material course at our school. Our german proffessor at a swedish school in finland is not the usual type as of course is nothing is here in finland. You will not be surprised to find me building a boat since joining this course. Being less about formulas and theories our course tries to prevent engineers from constructing structures that can not be build in the end. The best way to teach is still by pain and thus we are building our boat for nearly 25 hours this week – lets just hope

Arcada Interview

Just received my interview that i gave for the new arcada brochure a couple of weeks ago – i think i did not say it that smart but nice of arcada for putting it that way – if you want to check out the brochure and one of the best universities of applied life in finland feel free to download the whole brochure or visit their website. I am still very happy with my exchange in the swedish finnish community and would gladly recommend a stay to anybody interested in going to north europe.

Hyvää Suomi – Part 7

Actually (even though my finnish friends won’t like it) this podcast should be called Hyvää Venäjä. One week in Russia and i still have to process all the amazing experiences .. Crazy times – i think i should just start with the first three days and my trip to St. Petersburg.

iMovie and its Trailer Function

Some of you call me (rightfully?) an apple fan boy. Just in order to support this theory i got a new toy for my macbook – last week i proudly purchased the new iMovie 11. The new Trailer Function is just so fast that it took me about 15 Minutes to edit the following short clip. The long version has allready been published in 3 Podcast accessible on this blog.

By the way: don’t you think that the london symphony did a very nice job in producing the sound for my movie?

Whats up Suomi?

Lets start with the good news of this blog post: Nazis all over the world suck when it comes to spelling. In a way the graffiti i found on a s-bahn train in northern helsinki is typical. Finland still does not like to talk about the winter war and when it comes to immigration discussions they cite german former national Banker Thilo Sarrazin.

As a german i allways ask myself what non germans actually think when they draw symbols like that. Who are these individuals?

Do they want the “Wehrmacht” back as one fin told me a week ago in a queue to a club? Or are they really happy about how the germans behaved in Lappland in 1944? I have met way to many people who really thought that former Nazi Germany was a excellent thing. A country who has lost WWII on the side of Nazi Germany should have learned its lesson.

Don’t get me wrong: I stil love my new home but at times i would like to get more appreciation for the new germany and not what my grandfather messed up.

In the mean time – learn some sophisticated german spelling!

Go Papa, Go!

Dear Dad,

today you fulfill a dream in your life. After running the berlin marathon last year you want to proof that you can run in the land of endless freedom. I am proud of your courage and strong will to conquer the New York Marathon. I hope to have that much energy left once i get older. I am sure you’ll manage the challenge you have set yourself and i am envious of all the great experiences you will take home with you. Take it easy and enjoy the time of your life!
